TOEFL iBT®

The World's English Test

TOEFL iBT Reading Section

The TOEFL iBT Reading section measures your ability to read and understand English in both daily campus life and academic contexts. The tasks reflect the kinds of reading you may do as a student and in classroom situations.

Instead of long textbook passages, the Reading section uses focused texts and interactive tasks to measure how well you understand meaning, vocabulary, and ideas in context.

Reading Task Types

Reading skills are measured using three task types:

  • Complete the Words
You will complete partially missing words in a short text. This task measures your vocabulary knowledge and your ability to understand meaning from context.
  • Read in Daily Life
You will read short texts from everyday situations, such as notices, messages, or short informational texts. Questions measure your understanding of main ideas, key details, and implied meaning.
  • Read an Academic Passage
You will read an short academic passage similar to what you might see in a university course. Questions measure your ability to understand main ideas, supporting details, and important vocabulary.

What to Expect

  • Texts are concise and focused, so you can stay engaged and manage your time effectively.
  • All the information you need to answer the questions is included in the text.
  • You do not need prior knowledge of the topic to understand the question.

This section is designed to reflect real-academic reading tasks while giving you a clear and fair way to show your English reading skills.
